General Service & Hosting

How long will it take to set up my hosting package?

Your hosting package is automatically set up straight after you purchase your plan so you can get started right away.

I have an existing website hosted with another provider, can I transfer it to you?

Yes, we have several free migration options so you can migrate your existing website to us with minimal fuss straight from your Green Hosting Co. control panel.

If you need help migrating your website, our expert team offers a professional transfer for just £50 per website and £35 per email address.

Is green hosting as reliable as traditional hosting?

Absolutely! Green hosting providers ensure that their services are on par with, if not better than, traditional hosting providers in terms of reliability, performance, and customer support.

When you say renewable energy, is this wind, solar etc?

Our data centre is based in the UK and uses 100% renewable electricity generated by wind and hydro assets, which is provided by SSE.

Our data centres also have a market-beating PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) of 1.12, which is above and beyond industry norms of 1.2+. This minimises energy consumption which is a big factor in the impact web hosting has on our planet.

I have a website built using a website builder can you host it?

Sadly not. If your website has been built with any website builder, such as Squarespace, Wix, or Weebly, you are tied to their platform and their hosting service.

If you’re unsure if your site has been built using a website builder we’ll be happy to check for you. Just pop us a message with your domain name and we’ll have a look to see whether you’re free to move to our green hosting plans.

Why don't you offer unlimited web space?

According to a study by Carnegie Mellon University, it’s estimated that storing 10GB of data on the cloud would result in a carbon footprint of about 20kg per year. That may not seem like a lot, but it all adds up.

Currently, the digital industry is responsible for the same carbon emissions as the aviation industry and its impact is predicted to double by 2025.

That’s why we believe it’s important for everyone to be conscious of what they’re storing online and one of the most effective ways to do that is to set limits/charge for larger storage limits.

If you need more space than we offer on our standard plans get in touch and we can get you on a plan that gives you the space you need.

How do I manage my hosting?

You can manage your websites, databases, email, files, and every other aspect of your hosting account straight from your bespoke control panel. It’s been developed to ensure a sleek, modern and user-friendly experience.

As well as containing all the practical features you need, your control panel comes with lots of useful extras, including a range of website tools and 80+ one-click installs of popular software titles such as WordPress, Joomla!, Drupal, Magento, OpenCart, and more.

What kind of support do you offer?

We provide personal support via a ticket system. We also have a range of guides and tutorials available for you via our support database. Both of which you can access by logging into your account and heading to the Help Desk.

All of our support is UK-based and we never outsource it, meaning you’re always speaking to someone who understands our services and platforms inside out.

What are your data centres like?

Our state-of-the-art data centres offer the latest in security technologies and are manned 24/7, ensuring your data and websites are secure and monitored at all times. We have a resilient national network and enterprise-level cloud platform so you get the best possible hosting experience.

What are your policies for disposal of server, network and other equipment?

As more efficient technology becomes available, we replace our hardware. All hardware that reaches the end of life and is decommissioned is then either recycled or resold through refurbished hardware vendors. The only exception to this is any failed SSDs, which have to be destroyed for security purposes.

What platform do you use for web hosting?

Our green web hosting uses the Linux platform. We use Linux as it’s the industry standard and supports a wider range of languages and software than the Windows alternative.

Which programming languages and frameworks can I use?

You can use whichever programming language and framework you like. Please get in touch if you want to double-check if specific legacy versions are supported.

I have a WordPress website, do I need Managed WordPress hosting or can I choose standard green web hosting?

If you’re hosting WordPress sites, it’s always best to opt for a WordPress specific hosting plan as they’re designed to offer enhanced services and tools that you don’t get with standard web hosting plans. Some of the key benefits are:

Auto Core Updates: Your WordPress website will be upgraded to the latest version of WordPress and any security patches are applied automatically. You will still be responsible for keeping your theme and plugins up to date.

WordPress Staging, Cloning & Manager: Create a replica of your site with a single click and carry out testing/adding new content or code. Once you’re happy with the results, deploy those changes over to the live site seamlessly.

WordPress Checksum Report: We check if your core files match what exists in the official WordPress core repository and let you know if we spot anything fishy about the code.

WP-CLI, SSH access, SFTP/FTP, PHP version control, phpMyAdmin, PHP configuration and scheduled scripts.

Do I still need to update WordPress?

With our managed service, we update the WordPress core for you automatically whenever updates are released.

If you install any third-party themes or plugins, you’ll need to update them yourself from your WordPress dashboard. You will also be responsible for implementing PHP updates to your site from your account control panel.

Your VPS is automatically set up for you straight after you purchase your plan so you can jump straight in.

Are private networks really private?

Yes, when you create your own private network, you are creating a dedicated Virtual LAN (VLAN) in our data centre. You can assign this VLAN to as many servers as you like within the same data centre. You’re responsible for all IP numbering on your VLAN.

Is a green VPS as reliable as traditional VPS?

Absolutely! We pride ourselves on offering a service that is on par with, if not better than, traditional hosting providers.

How many IP addresses do I get?

All our VPS hosting comes with one dedicated IP address – you can order up to three additional IP addresses for £75 per year.

Domain Names

When will my domain name be live?

Domains are registered and secured as soon as you complete the checkout process. In the majority of cases, your domain name will be live within a few hours. But it can take up to 72 hours for a domain name to become visible on the internet as it globally updates. This applies for all domain names regardless of extension or registrar (aka who you purchase it through).

Do I need to buy web hosting?

No. You don’t have to buy web hosting with us or anyone else to secure a domain name. But if you are in the market for web hosting we have plenty of green hosting options available for you to take advantage of. Explore our Green Web Hosting, WordPress Hosting, WooCommerce Hosting, Virtual Private Servers, and Cloud Servers to find the right plan for you and take advantage of our powerful platforms and seamless, trouble-free services all in one place.

Who owns my domain name?

You do. We’re just looking after it for you. You have full rights and control over your domain and they are always registered in your name.

How do I renew my domain name?

Your domain name is set to renew automatically so you don’t have to worry about remembering it yourself. If you prefer not to auto-renew, you can change this from your control panel.

I have a domain with another provider, can I transfer it to you?

Yes, as long as you have at least 14 days before your domain renews or expires you can transfer your domain to us in minutes.

You also don’t have to wait for your renewal date, as any time left on your current plan will transfer over.
